People are constantly observing other people’s behavior and forming theories about them. Expectations are biased, people tend to label others depending on their gender, culture, personality, etc.

You are in control of your professional image, your qualities and characteristics that represent your competence, character, and commitment. No one will be able to argue about them, they are judged by your clients, superiors, subordinates, and colleagues.

What do you want your professional image to look like?

  • people often give you direct feedback that tells you what they think about your level of competence, character, and commitment

  • you also receive indirect feedback through job assignments, referrals, recommendations

How do you control and manage the impression you have on others?

  • By building trust and maintaining authenticity

  • Through non-verbal behavior (appearance, demeanor), verbal behavior (vocal pitch, tone, rate of speech), and performance (accomplishments)

  • Strategically presenting yourself in a manner that communicates the meaning and significance of your work

Every day behavior educate others about the positive qualities of your identity

If your actions contradict your values, you might compromise your performance, relationships, and your well being.

When you present yourself in a manner that is both true to self and valued and believed by others, you are building credibility and maintaining authenticity.

What is competence?

The degree of utilization of knowledge, skills, and the good judgment related to the people’s profession, and in correspondence with all the situations that can be lived in the exercise of professional practice. Examples: problem solving, global perspective, communication, professional development interest.

What is character?

The integrated pattern of personal, academic and occupational behaviors. Commitment and confidence, responsibility and dependability, honesty and ethical behavior. Examples: honesty, flexibility, compassion.

What is commitment?

Is a strong belief in an idea or system, a pledge to follow a certain course of action. Examples: a desire to advance, being a team player, listen to suggestions, show leadership.
