Cover Letters

A cover letter should add strategic information to your application and not repeat what is already stated in your resume. It should get the reader excited and make them want to meet you - invite you to an interview.

In your cover letter, you want to be able to communicate why you are right candidate for the position and a good fit for the organization.

  • First, make sure to research the correct name of the organization, its address, and the name and title of the person hiring. You also want to include all your contact information just like you did with your resume.

  • Second, read the job posting carefully and do some research on the organization’s values and mission. What attracts you to this organization? Why do you want to work there? What immediate value do you bring?

  • Third, and to make the process of writing cover letters easier, you want to develop a strong template that you can use to tailor for different applications. The strategy is to create a 3 paragraphs letter with: an introduction, a middle paragraph, and a closing.

Here are some ideas:

Introduction:

I am writing to apply for the (title) position with (company name) in the (location) office. I learned about the opportunity through (platform, contact). Currently, I am (position title) and I believe I have the skills and experience you are looking for.

Middle Paragraph:

My previous success in (area of expertise) has proven my ability to (strategic achievements related to the employer’s requirement) - here you can use 3-4 bullets to specifically address top results

Closing:

I am eager to learn more about (position) and would love the opportunity to discuss my background and your requirements in greater detail. Being a (team-player, quick learner, etc. - chose 3 personal descriptors matching the position/employer’s requirements) who loves challenges, I will (what results can you deliver for them? - you can also address your connection to the organization’s values and mission statement).

A cover letter is also a sample of your written communication skills, please pay attention to the details.
