You are leaving
You are leaving
You’ve decided to leave your job…
here are some tips before you walk away:
- PREPARE for your next step: update your resume, ask trusted colleagues for recommendations, have work samples and create your portfolio, go over your past performance reviews and prepare your accomplishment’s stories
- REVIEW your finances, talk to your financial adviser, make a monthly budget and have a cushion saved
- PLAN your exit: offer to help with the transition, participate in your replacement’s hiring process, train your replacement, leave your office/desk organized, return all materials (laptop, phone, etc)
- NOTIFY your boss, give at least two weeks (check your employment contract), express your gratitude and professionally explain the reason for leaving, keep your interactions positive. You are moving to advance your career, mention the positives about your experience (supervisor, colleagues, opportunities, clients)
- t WRITE A RESIGNATION LETTER: send it to your boss and the HR department
- MEET with HR to confirm your last paycheck and review benefits, IRA rollover, unused vacation, etc
- OBTAIN RECOMMENDATION: ask colleagues and your supervisor to provide you with letters and if they would be willing to act as a reference
- SAY GOODBYE and stay in touch
