Job Loss

Job Loss

You may lose your job through termination (being "fired”), through a layoff, or because you’ve decided to move on. The end result is all the same: you lose that job.

Job loss can make you feel a range of emotions.

  • shock

  • grief

  • rejection

  • embarrassment

  • sadness

  • anger

It can bring feelings of being stuck, low self-esteem, low confidence.

It can bring issues of loss of structure, income, insurance.

It can trigger anxiety over the “unknown”, stress, fear of the present and future.

When processing a job loss, there are three main steps:

  1. To allow the emotions and feelings to come out, to be aware that those are common during the process.

  2. To know that you are not alone, that you can seek support from friends or family who will listen, to reach out to professionals who can help you heal.

It’s important to stay active, to exercise, be in nature, meditate, practice forms of mindfulness.

  3. To regroup, here is when you

    • establish a routine (workspace, work hours, exercise, job search, fun)

    • set new career goals

    • face your barriers

    • take inventory of your accomplishments,

    • prepare your branding documents

    • activate your network.

In the last step, you need to develop: confidence, courage, endurance, motivation, openness, trust, curiosity.

You need to:

  • say yes to networking and to new opportunities

  • learn to deal with rejection

  • fill the gaps by taking classes, gain a certification or volunteer to develop new skills

A career is a constant change of challenges, opportunities, zigzags, circles, one must learn to adapt and change.

"So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable,

and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable."

—Christopher Reeve
