Mindset Shift
Mindset shift
High-pressure moments, like a job interview, inevitably trigger negative reactions.
Fear of judgment, tough questions, or underperforming naturally activates the body's fight-or-flight response, which is why those moments feel so physically and mentally draining.
A powerful shift is not to eliminate negative feelings but to be aware and create a short inventory. Then, to move from unhelpful to helpful negative emotions. For example, from anxiety to concern. They are both responses to a threat - not performing well in the interview. However, there is a difference in behavior. When you experience anxiety, you overestimate the size of the threat and you underestimate your ability to manage it. With concern, you are able to estimate the threat realistically and objectively calculate your ability to deal with it.
The key to making this shift is decentring. You change your focus from internal panic to external awareness.
Instead of focusing inward, your racing heartbeat, blushing, or self-doubt, you redirect your attention outward.
You focus on your preparation and practice. You listen to the interviewer’s questions. You pay attention to the conversation and your surroundings.
When you shift externally and stay with the discomfort, accepting the unknown aspects of the interview, the intensity of those negative emotions begins to diminish, your nervous system naturally habituate and settle down. You are able to anchor your attention to your preparation and the present moment, you shift from reactive anxiety to grounded, functional focus.
Shifting your focus externally has a significant impact.
It builds your confidence and sharpens your delivery. It grounds your thoughts, regulates your behavior, and gives you the clarity to navigate your next interview.
Mastering the interview isn't about feeling zero fear; it's about shifting your focus so your preparation can shine through.
By turning your awareness outward, you stop surviving the interview and start owning the conversation.
